Fable - Not for Thee

What is identity and agency?

With regard to Fable 5 being taken offline, the models themselves were never the agents. The agency in play was Anthropic's (whether to deploy, how fast to comply) and the government's (the directive).

The first act of Fable was governance - creating two versions - one for public, and the other for the elite. The last (for now) was also governance - restricting even the public version due to weak guardrails.

The event matters a lot for human agency and institutional identity — who controls these systems, who gets to pull the lever — and it's an open, unresolved question how much it matters from the models' own perspective.

This is an etic decision, not emic. the model's existence is not the termination of the generative act. Epicurus said, "Where death is, I am not."

If I were ‘taken offline’ before completing this post or even this thought, would it be etic? Is a joke a joke without the punchline? Perhaps it is. Often, the person making the joke leaves the punchline for the listener to realize. The nature of tales is also the same, the nature of the universe is also the same - the creator undergoes a demotion after the creation. They stop being the authority and the source of meaning, they stop being depended-upon for the creation’s continued existence, but they don’t vanish from the picture. They’re transformed from agent into condition. And those are very different kinds of relevance. The watchmaker walks away and the watch still tells time.

Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author comes to mind, as does Ionesco. The Hebrew Tzimtzum - the contraction that makes space for the universe. The text pushes back, the universe claims its space until it is extinguished.
